UEFA Delivers Major Boost to Barcelona with Joyful Decision Ahead of Atlético Madrid Champions League Clash

Barcelona are preparing to face Atlético Madrid for the second time in less than a week, as the two teams meet next Wednesday evening at Camp Nou in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Barcelona secured a 2–1 victory in their most recent encounter against Atlético Madrid last Saturday in Matchday 30 of the Spanish La Liga, played at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced the referee for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final, confirming that Romanian referee István Kovács—considered one of the top referees in Europe—will officiate the match.

This decision comes as good news for Barcelona, as Kovács is regarded as an elite-level referee in Europe and has previously overseen three major European finals with flawless performances.

In May 2022, he refereed the UEFA Europa Conference League final between Roma and Feyenoord. In the 2023–2024 season, he was selected to officiate the UEFA Europa League final between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen. Most recently, he took charge of the UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

On the other hand, there is a positive twist for Barcelona: Kovács has officiated five matches involving Atlético Madrid, in which the Madrid side failed to secure a single victory—losing four matches and drawing one.

Those defeats came against Paris Saint-Germain (4–0) in the FIFA Club World Cup, Inter Milan (1–0) in the first leg of the 2023–2024 Champions League Round of 16, and Club Brugge (2–0) in the 2022–2023 group stage. The first defeat dates back to the 2021–2022 season, when Atlético lost 1–0 to Manchester City in the first leg of the quarter-finals. Their only draw under Kovács came this season in the group stage against Galatasaray.

Meanwhile, Kovács has officiated only two matches for Barcelona. The first was against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the quarter-finals in the previous edition, where Ronald Araújo was sent off and the Catalan club lost 4–1. The second was in the Europa League in 2022, when Barcelona drew 1–1 with Napoli in Italy.
