“I Will Call This Player” — Víctor Font Reveals the First Decision He Would Make if He Wins Barcelona’s Presidential Elections

Barcelona’s presidential elections are scheduled for next year, and Víctor Font will be among the candidates competing against Joan Laporta for the club’s top position.

Font presented his electoral project in the presence of notable figures such as Xavi Hernández, with the former Barcelona coach appearing at a club-related media event — one of his first public appearances since his dismissal.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Font discussed several topics and revealed that Lionel Messi would be the first person he would call if he won the elections. When asked whether he envisioned a “last dance” for the Argentine maestro, he said:

“Personally, as a Barcelona fan, it gives me goosebumps. But it depends on him, and we must not use him as propaganda. Laporta has done that many times — most notably during the elections — and it was yet another promise that was not fulfilled. Messi should not be used, but he should know that the first phone call I make after winning the election will be to him.”

One of the main reasons Joan Laporta emerged as the favorite to win the 2021 elections was his claim that he could convince Lionel Messi to stay at the club.

However, despite the Argentine’s desire to remain, Laporta ultimately decided that offering him a new contract was not in the club’s best interest — a decision that remains one of the biggest criticisms of his current presidency.
